We at the The Times noticed last week that Facebook started talking about the new look and features they would be rolling out soon. They had info boxes on their pages, and they were in the media explaining it. A lot of people would have you believe that this is part of a Twitter-killer philosophy. We disagree for a lot of a reason, mostly because of the following equation which we will discuss next week:
Facebook <> Twitter <> Google
We think that Facebook was front and centre with all of this is because they finally learned a very important lesson: If you're going to make a change, be sure that people know you're going to do it. The last few changes they made surprised a lot of people, and they caught a lot of flack for it, a good portion of it undeservedly. This time they prepared people for the updates via multiple channels, and with the launch of the new page and new features tonight they are also explaining the changes on the pages that have been updated.
We at The Times think this is a great move, and hope that this will cut out a lot of the needless clatter of people complaining any time anything changes.
